Bill Russell - the winningest NBA Player EVER!
Alistair wanted to be Michael Jordan, then LeVaur told him about Bill Russell.
He changed his mind.Â
Bill Russell won 11 championship rings during his 13-year NBA career with the Celtics, and was the first Black NBA superstar. Turning to a coaching and later commentating career after retirement, his superstardom is of particular note because he leveraged his influence for good. A 2011 Presidential Medal of Honor recipient, he led the first ever boycott of a game for a civil rights protest, stood up for Muhammad Ali's conscientious objection to the Vietnam War, marched with Dr. King, and even opened an integrated basketball camp in Mississippi with Medgar Evers' brother after Evers' murder in 1963.
Upon his death in 2022, the NBA retired his jersey number, #6, across the entire league. He is the only NBA player to receive that honor. The only two athletes who have ever received the same honor are Jackie Robinson and Wayne Gretzsky.
